Reinforced concrete is different from other building materials. This material, which is not homogeneous, whose behavior depends on time and load history, and is not linear-elastic, has been tried to be put under the cover of classical theories for many years. However, reinforced concrete has not been put under these covers and has continued to exhibit its unique behavior. Therefore, a contemporary and realistic education, a contemporary regulation must definitely be based on behavior and bearing capacity. Behavior can only be learned through experimental studies.
Considering all these reasons, priority was given to the Structural Mechanics Laboratory when METU was established in the late fifties. In the reinforced concrete education that started in 1959 at METU, behavior and bearing capacity have been indispensable for this education.
Of course, domestic and foreign sources were also used in the creation of this book, which has been printed in numerous editions. However, in each section, what was learned from experimental research conducted at METU Structural Mechanics Laboratory and calculation methods developed based on the experimental results are also presented to the reader.
This book was first published in the seventies under a single name - Uğur Ersoy - then Güney Özcebe joined the authorship, followed by Erdem Canbay. This development emphasizes the importance of teamwork.
